Review

If you try to imagine what a traditional Yorkshire boozer would be like what instantly springs to mind is the Victorian grandeur of this well-established pub. Having sat proudly on the corner of Kirkgate next to the railway line and hemmed in by modern buildings, The Duck & Drake is an oasis of tradition. That's not to say it's stuck in the past, far from it. The interior may be classic pub, with a central double sided bar and spacious rooms to each side but the fact that they boast a huge range of up to 15 cask ales, all served well and at a really good price just goes to show there's plenty of life in this pub.

Known as The Duck & Drake since 1985 and winning many awards along the way it's infamous for its live music, cask beers and pie and peas. A great spot to be welcomed for a friendly chat with the locals during the day or really rock out into the wee hours with their vast range of bands.

To the rear is a large well planted beer garden, partially covered and with loads of seating. A totem to rock with a very metal looking duck head oversees all, including the original Victorian outside toilet which must be one of the most psychedelic ones in the City. I don’t usually include photos of the loos but I just had to on this occasion.

As a bastion of tradition within a sea of modernity The Duck & Drake shows just how to survive and flourish in this day and age, we certainly recommend popping in for the experience.
