Hidden away in the Esk Valley in the North York Moors national park is the beautiful hamlet of Beck Hole, home to the renowned mid 1800s Birch Hall Inn.
Consisting of a tiny little bar room which is relatively unchanged since the 1930s, a little shop and a second small bar in the Victorian extension. Down a narrow passage are the rather vintage outdoor toilets and a large beer garden with views on the the river Esk and the bridge.
This grade II listed pub is a charming slice of history, nostalgic and cosy. Mainly focused on local tourism, especially walkers passing through the area, they have quite limited opening hours so always worth checking if you plan to visit.
Their house beer, humorously called Beckwatter, does strike some resemblance to the peat coloured river but thankfully tastes nothing like it. It was a lovely traditional Mild from Three Brothers Brewing which was a welcome refreshment after a good walk.
It's cash only and no kids in the bar but there's plenty of spots outside to perch. I can imagine it's pretty busy there in summer so it was nice to visit on clement late winter's day. We'll definitely stop off again on future walks.

The Buck Inn is a beautiful Grade II listed 18th & 19th Century traditional village pub situated across the road from the 13th Century Market Cross in the centre of the picturesque North Yorkshire village of Thornton-le-Dale.
It has two well furnished rooms to the front sharing the bar, which had a small but decent local cask offering on. Both of these rooms are dog friendly, which was perfect for our family. There's a larger restaurant / function room in the other part of the building which was also very attractive and a large beer garden with a covered area to the rear. The garden is basically a big stretch of grass, which I'm sure can accommodate plenty of people and be great in the Summer but the tables were all stacked up when we visited in early Spring.
A specific highlight that really made us chuckle was the Lost Property Fox, a great way to save those items left behind after an evening in the pub. It also looked like they had regular entertainment, quiz nights and there was a dart board to the back of the lounge.
Overall the pub had a very nice cosy ambience with great service and some of the best pub food we've had in a very long time. It's a well-kept friendly village local that is as welcoming to tourists as the locals and certainly worth a visit if you're in the area.
We recommended grabbing an Ice-Cream from Balderson's next door or some quality treats from the Chocolate Factory across the road and heading down to enjoy Thornton Beck afterwards.

Situated in the picturesque village of Crakehall in Bedale and overlooking their quaint village green is the The Bay Horse Inn. A traditional local pub which was originally built as a blacksmiths shop in the 17th century and now operates as a simple open plan space with a central bar serving a couple of Theakston's beers.
With a characterful beamed ceiling and cosy window seats in the bay windows it serves the locals well with darts, pool table and a small TV. The pub is home to the local cricket team as well as providing the usual regular evening entertainment and they also have a small range of food offerings.
We received a very warm welcome and it seemed like a great friendly local and although the beer garden is a little basic just at the front of the pub the view across the green was beautiful. Not bad for a brief stop over.

The Horseshoe Inn is a quaint 19th Century pub located in the picturesque rural Village of Levisham up on the North York Moors. It sits proudly at the top of the village with a wonderful beer garden overlooking the surroundings. Due to the location it is certainly more of an Inn and Gastropub than a drinkers destination but they have a warm welcome for all stopping by including people walking around the local stunning countryside, just make sure you leave any muddy boots at the door. As such there's not a huge range on the bar and it is a little more pricey but there's certainly enough for a couple of refreshing pints from Theakson's and Timothy Taylor's to keep you happy.
When we visited Sunday lunch was in full swing and the place was bustling, with the rather hairy drive down the country lanes and dipping down into the steep valley of Levisham Beck it definitely must be worth the trip. The menu looked good with a small selection of quality locally sourced produce.
With a wide range of rooms also available for B&B The Horseshoe Inn would make a great base for a short break exploring the Moors, it's also just a short walk over to Levisham Station where you can catch a ride on the historic North Yorkshire Moors Railway to explore the countryside further. All in all it's a beautiful spot to stop off at for welcome refreshments.

The Doghouse or the Saviour of Selby as I like to call it, is a great proper craft beer pub conveniently situated opposite Selby Bus Station with the Railway Station just up the road. Originally opened by The Little Black Dog Brewery out of Carleton it's now run by Rhythm & Brews who brew a lot of the beer available on the bar on site. There were 18 different beers on the bar when we visited, including 5 cask. A superb range of styles which were a little above average price on keg but better than average for cask, so it balances out a bit. At the end of the day if there are that many beers to choose from do you really want to be drinking pints anyway?
The pub is deceivingly large inside the old Georgian house, with the bar in the front room and a cosy space towards the back, upstairs is a large open plan area perfect for events, of which the lay on quite a few. Every inch of the building is decorated in graphics, music quotes, brewing information and all sorts. It’s a cacophony of design that lends a bright friendly character to the building. The toilets are also some of the cleanest I've ever seen, especially when we visited late on a Saturday night. The whole place was clean, fresh and welcoming which is a sure-fire bonus even if you are the only craft pub in the whole of Selby. With their own Mexican street food offerings to soak up the beers as well it's definitely a hit with the locals and a welcome destination for those looking for a more quality experience in the town.
