In 2015 Leeds Brewery renovated the previous Plunketts Restaurant and reopened it as the Eagle & Child. The pub is a beautiful Grade II listed timber framed structure built in 1640 and they have been faithful to the building, opening up and stripping it back so all the ancient features are visible. It's a smart modern space within a characterful wonky building with plenty of room to find a table over its three floors, but our favourite little spot is a narrow opening on the first floor that seems to be between the walls of the building. It's a great cosy and atmospheric little space if you can get it. Alternatively you can grab a seat by one of the large windows that look out onto High Petergate and get a glimpse of the mighty York Minster.
Although Cameron's took over the Leeds Brewery pub in 2016 this just means that alongside the great range of 8 casks and kegs from Leeds are their pretty decent beers as well. Plenty to be going on with.
Alongside the beer the Eagle & Child do a nice range of food and frequently have live music. There's a pleasant walled courtyard to the rear as well which can be quite a sun trap in the summer months. Basically it's just a great all round pub that has firmly solidified itself as a key venue to visit in York's historic City Centre.
