The Dog & Duck is a traditional and friendly local pub consisting of a bar and lounge area to the front and a snug towards the back. There are real fires to each end of the divided front space and the bar has six decent cask ales on, served well and at a good price.
The décor is bright and bold revealing its 1930's heritage, with a loud red proper pub carpet, maroon brentwood seating and plenty of polished brass. There are no dark corners to hide away in here but that just all adds to the wonderful community feeling of being welcomed into a family home. There's sport on the large TV in the bar but also plenty of space to sit and relax out of the way. Apparently the food they serve in the lounge is very popular. There's also some separate accommodation buildings at the rear which could be a good place to stay over if you're visiting.
This pub really was a little treat and not what we were expecting, it turned out to be a great characterful and welcoming place, certainly worth popping by for a couple of pints.

The Monks Walk is a fantastically quirky and historic Grade II* listed pub in Beverley. The 18th Century façade belies the curiosities to be found within. Entering down a central alleyway which is dated 1671, the actual Monks Walk, the pub is split between the two buildings to either side. A multitude of rooms and floors spanning hundreds of years of history, some dating back as far as 1420! The Minster Bar is directly to the right with one brightly lit timber roofed room to the front and a more atmospheric cavern-like room to the back. They're split by the bar which also has a little serving hatch out onto the alley.
There were five casks and five kegs beers on amongst the standard lagers, all of which were a good range of styles and at a very decent price. Plenty to keep us entertained for a whole evening and we wish we could have stayed longer. In our explorations of all the other rooms there were of course some characterful toilets to the left, a pool room and a pleasant loft space which was being used for live music. The pub is renowned for its regular entertainment including folk festivals and a wide range of other music and events, so there's always something going on. Wandering down to the end of the alley there's also a surprisingly large paved courtyard at the rear which must be a great spot in Summer.
Out of all the pubs we visited in Beverley this was certainly my favourite and definitely an essential stop if you're in the area, we could easily while the whole night away at the Monks Walk.

The Potting Shed in Beverley is a charismatically decorated chain bar with large open industrial chic spaces with fake flowers hanging from the ceiling and an impressively large beer garden. They also have a good sized rooftop terrace, all overlooking the sports fields of the nearby Beverley Leisure Complex. As chain bars go it was a pretty decent place, one of the only venues we could find that was big enough to successfully book a large group for food in town. They have their own Pizza oven and rolled out some good grub for us to refuel on. The beer on the other hand was severely limited, but at least there was one Atom Beer on keg, although it was priced at a premium.
There was certainly a good mix of people there, from families to hen parties but it was still a pretty calm atmosphere and we were looked after well. With a lack of this type of bar in Beverly it is definitely a popular destination for food but I don't think we'd just go there for drinks. With its fresh modern look, clean toilets and good access it's decent enough stop off.

You can't visit Beverley without a trip back in time to the White Horse Inn. The building predates 1666 and has been run as a coaching inn since then. Locally known as Nellies after the daughter of Francis Collinson who purchased the pub from the church in 1927, she took over from her father and managed the pub right up until 1976 when it was sold to Sam Smiths Brewery.
Although Sam's stupid draconian rules have maintained the pub as basically a living museum it does make it much less of a pleasant place to visit if you dare to even acknowledge you own a mobile phone, it's ok to pay with one though it would seem. Which can make it very hard to take photos, these are banned as well, so please excuse the candid shots, it's the best I could manage.
That aside though the pub is a stunning maze of corridors and rooms with heavily worn tiles, wonky floors and historic features, including original gas lit lanterns and old fireplaces. It's a cosy world away from the 21st Century and with the largest range of Sam's beers we've ever seen in one of their pubs.
It goes without saying the prices are the lowest you can get for the core beers but the Wheat beer I had was a normal pub price. There was also a large pool room to the back in a more modern section of the building, I was quite surprised they allowed some actual fun.
I do feel that the history of the pub could be maintained without CCTV in each room checking that you're not breaking any of the long list of rules, it's not like there was any signal in there anyway, and as such I can't award a full score for Nellies, although I would definitely pop in again for the unique ambience.
