The Phoenix Inn is a traditional 1830s Victorian built pub tucked up just next to the City Walls by Fishergate Bar in York. It retains its late 19th century interior which has been lovingly preserved and kept fresh over the years, with a front Public Bar which has a couple of tables all brightly lit from the frosted front windows, softened by the wood panelled walls, low level lighting and the inviting open fire.
To the side of the bar down the corridor is small servery area with some fixed bench seating which leads onto the two spacious back rooms. The first of which has another open fireplace with more seating and the other is tucked around the corner playing host to their Bar Billiards table and dart board.
The toilets are about as traditional as you can get, the proper early 19th century porcelain type and are very well kept for their age. Make sure you check out the 1920s pin ups in the Gents fellas, I can't vouch for what's on the walls in the Ladies.
With a warm and cosy feel the Phoenix is the perfect place to while away the hours in its relaxed and peaceful ambience. Helped by the always great range of five rotating locally produced cask beers at good price, frequent live Jazz music and a wonderful little yard to the rear from which you can watch the sun set behind the City Walls in the warmer months.
Because the pub is in a more quiet residential area of the City this is a true friendly local that is welcoming to all, including families and dogs. It is certainly one of our firm favourites in York and well worth the short walk out of the City centre to discover.
