Situated in the large Village of Church Fenton near Tadcaster The White Horse is an imposing white rendered pub dating back to 1881, which nearly met its demise in 2016 when it looked like it might be closed for good. Thanks to the enterprising local residents they banded together and bought the pub in 2018, bringing it under community ownership to continue to serve the Village and beyond.
It can look a little dark and mysterious from the roadside but once you enter the low ceilinged front room it looks smart and modern with warm wood cladding and herringbone flooring throughout. There's a small snug at the front with the bar which had a couple of local cask ales on, served fresh and well at a very reasonable price. Towards the back of the pub is a much larger and brighter room which looks to be predominantly used for dining and a long spacious function room for events.
The real treat here though is the expansive beer garden to the rear, a lovely spot for some alfresco drinks in a beautiful location.
All we can say is that if this was our local pub we'd fight for it to stay open as well, it's a great spot with friendly welcoming staff and looks to do a good range of food as well. It's certainly worth a trip over to Church Fenton and with their own railway station you could even leave the car at home.
